There is no strict maximum or minimum page limit enforced. However, 50–60 pages is a standard benchmark for a project of this scope and is a good range to aim for.

That being said, prioritise quality over quantity. A concise, well-structured 30-page thesis is always better than a 60-page one filled with "fluff." Focus on clearly communicating your research and results rather than hitting a specific number.

Your supervisor is the best person to advise on whether your thesis has sufficient detail. Rather than asking for a target page number, it’s more useful to share your current draft and discuss whether any areas need further development or if anything important is missing.

No, when writing your thesis, start from your Thesis Plan document, then remove the pages in the Thesis Plan prior to the Thesis title page. Your final Thesis document should begin at the thesis title page

IEEE is the default referencing style for the thesis. That said, referencing styles can sometimes vary by research area, so if your supervisor has requested a different style, please follow their lead. If they haven't mentioned it, stick with IEEE.

This is organised between you and your supervisor. Please contact your supervisor for any questions relating to the time of your presentation.

Not normally, but your supervisor can choose to record it for their records.

Notionally, undergraduate thesis students own the IP for their project. However, if you join an existing UQ research project, you will need to assign your IP to UQ. For industry‑sponsored projects, IP arrangements must be negotiated with the industry partner before the project begins. In many cases, if an NDA is required, it will also cover IP rights.

If your research does not involve humans, animals, or their data then you don’t need to apply for ethics; else you do need to consider ethics

If your research involves humans but

• is low or negligible risk and;
• does not include vulnerable groups (such as children) or animals and;
• the project is purely for research training, i.e. it is just for your thesis and there is no chance that you will publish

Then follow these steps:

• Complete an ethics training session, eg see the video under “Past events / Ethics training for data scientists” https://www.uq.edu.au/research/research-support/ethics-integrity-and-compliance/human-ethics/training
• Obtain consent from anyone involved (it can be verbal)
• Disclose to participants what the data will be used for.

Your supervisor needs to email ETSG to organise purchase through the university system (and provide student number, course, amount).

Equipment and facilities such as server expenses would be expected to be provided by equipment that the university already owns, where available.

For other specific costs, your supervisor needs to email the school manager with a description of your project and justification for the costs. You cannot get reimbursed if you pay those costs yourself.

You will need to carry out any necessary risk assessments, undertake necessary training and inductions, and define necessary contingency plans. Your supervisor will need to review and approve risk assessments and ensure any relevant training needs are met.
