Bachelor of Information Technology - Program changes in 2026

For students commencing in 2026, key changes to the Bachelor of Information Technology (BInfTech) program include:

• A revised core structure with updated core and elective offerings
• Introduction of a new major in Solution Architecture (replacing the Software Design major)
• The minor in Computer Systems will no longer be available.

1. Core courses
   The number of BInfTec core courses in the new program is 22 units. Newly developed core courses will be rolled out from Semester 1, 2026. The core now includes a dedicated ethical practice course (COMP2200) and a new studio course (DECO2840) with a focus on cyber security topics.
    
2. Majors
   The new program structure includes 3 major options for students to choose from. The User Experience Design and Software Information Systems majors have been retained. A new major, Solution Architecture, will replace the previous Software Design major. 
    
3. Program and general electives
   There is no change to the requirements for elective courses under the new program structure. However, some differences appear in the 2026 course list because certain 2025 elective courses have been moved to other sections in the 2026 course list.
    
4. Dual Programs
   Majors will no longer be offered in BInfTech dual degree programs. Dual degree students complete 32 units towards the BInfTech component. Due to the increase in core courses to 22 units, a 16-unit major is no longer possible. Data shows that very few students in the dual degrees graduated with a declared major, so these changes are expected to have minimal impact.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (BInfTech) program is being updated to ensure it remains relevant and competitive in a rapidly evolving technology landscape. 

The changes are designed to:

• Meet industry and student expectations: Employers want graduates with strong foundations in emerging technologies like AI and generative AI.
• Keep pace with technological change: New courses will give you the skills to use cutting-edge tools effectively.
• Clarify program identity and choice: The Bachelor of Information Technology (BInfTech) and Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSc) will have more distinct focuses. BInfTech will focus more on design and studio practice, while BCompSc will keep its strong technical and theoretical core - both offering flexibility and clear pathways.
• Improve graduate outcomes and meet accreditation standards: The changes strengthen learning experiences, build industry-relevant skills, and ensure alignment with ACS accreditation requirements.

The choice to transition to the new program structure is entirely yours. Your current program remains fully accredited and delivers the same high-quality outcomes as the new structure.

The 2026 changes mainly reorganise courses and add flexibility for new students. All new courses are available for current students to take as electives.

Yes, if you stay under the pre-2026 program rules, you can take a new course offered from 2026 as long as it fits within your current program requirements.

However, you cannot replace an existing core course with a new core course from the 2026 program. Any new course would need to count as an elective. If you’re unsure, please contact the School for advice.

Students who wish to declare a major from the 2026 program will be required to change to the new structure by submitting a program change request in mySI-net.

Students who drop the other component of their dual degree and continue with the Bachelor of Information Technology may have the option to remain under the program rules and requirements of the year they commenced the dual program. You must add a comment to indicate this in your program change request if opting to remain in the pre-2026 program structure. 

If you wish to follow the new 2026 structure, you will need to change programs to the 2026 Bachelor of Information Technology. To drop a component of your dual program to study the single BInfTech program, you must lodge a program change request in SI-net. To change to the 2026 program you must submit a program change request  via mySI-net within the published application periods (see academic calendar). Once a program change is approved, you will not be permitted to return to the pre-2026 structure.

It is very important that existing students complete the transition checklist and seek academic advice before deciding to follow the new program structure. The school has support available for you, but it is your responsibility to ensure that your enrolment allows you to meet the program requirements.

If you choose to switch to the new program, you will be required to follow all 2026 program structure and program requirements. Please note that in some instances, there are no existing substitutions for new compulsory courses in the new program. This may require you to complete additional courses above the minimum program requirements. Please also note new courses will be progressively rolled out, which may result in a potential delay to your graduation. 

To change program, you must carefully complete each of the following steps:  

1. Complete the relevant transition checklist.  
2. Use the completed transition checklist to create your study plan.  
3. Submit a copy of your transition checklist and study plan to the faculty at enquiries@eait.uq.edu.au  
4. Submit a Program Change request on SI-net within the published application period.

No. Due to the increase in the size of the core, BInfTech majors will no longer be available in the dual programs. (38 units are required to complete the core plus a major and all dual degrees have a 32 unit BInfTech component.)

If you remain in your current program rules, no, your graduation timeline should not be affected as long as you meet all of your program requirements.

If you change to the 2026 structure, course offerings and credit transfer may impact your graduation. Please complete a transition checklist and create a study plan to determine your expected graduation semester.

Graduation checks are completed by the EAIT Faculty during your expected final semester. It is not possible for the School to identify sooner if you are not following the program requirements. 

It is strongly recommended that you contact the School if you have any concerns about your enrolment. 

If you have enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology and after a semester or two you've decided its not for you, there is some flexibility to change to the Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSc) or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (BE) majoring in Software Engineering.

Many courses are shared between these programs, only requiring that you take additional courses to satisfy the program requirements.

For example, in Software Engineering (BE), you could choose Engineering-focused first-year courses as electives in the Bachelor of Information Technology. Upon satisfying the entry requirements (subject to satisfactory grades), you can proceed to the 2nd year of Software Engineering (BE).
