Nudging High-Accessible Privacy Policy Compliance

Speaker: Baiqi Chen
Host/Chair: Prof Hongzhi Yin

Abstract:
Privacy concerns regarding personal data have attracted significant attention among online end-users in recent years. In response, service providers are required to release a privacy policy document that clearly declares their data handling practices to end-users. However, ensuring that privacy policies are both compliant and highly accessible remains problematic. Online service providers might lack sufficient awareness of the content that a privacy policy should include. On the one hand, some service providers lack a full understanding of the relevant regulatory requirements, resulting in policy descriptions that may violate legal provisions. On the other hand, privacy policies are regarded as legal or semi-legal documents, which are usually lengthy and complex for end-users to understand. Many service providers lack the experience to draft privacy policies that are accessible and user-friendly with still meeting compliance standards. In this situation, service providers violate the data protection regulations and mislead end-users' understanding of their services. For service providers, this can lead to substantial penalties, including reputation damage and significant financial loss.
This thesis aims to nudge the high-accessible privacy policy compliance among online services for the providers. First, this thesis explores the online services' actual data handling practices aligned with the declared policies to meet the high-accessible privacy policy compliance. Second, this thesis investigates the interpretation of privacy policies from end-users' perspectives to nudge the high-accessible privacy policy compliance for service providers. According to the analysis findings, this thesis finally implements the automatic generation of explanations for technical terms in a privacy policy.
