An exploration of data quality awareness and impacts in healthcare

Abstract: 

This study examines the effect that specific types of data quality education have on the awareness that employees have of data quality in healthcare EHRs, and the relationship between that behaviour and outcome (actual data quality). The study proposes that data quality can be improved by raising the awareness of data quality through educating staff responsible for data entry. While this proposition is supported by literature, there is little empirical evidence. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach consisting of conceptual and contextual data quality education, perceptions surveys and live data snapshots taken from an EHR in a busy tertiary maternity hospital. We posit that data quality education will improve data quality awareness leading to improved data quality outcomes.

Shane is a dedicated and outcome focused Information Technology and business professional with an extensive track record of achieving business outcomes. He is recognised for significant contributions to a variety of organisations over a career spanning 20+ years, including land information management, banking and insurance, finance and wealth management, retail, manufacturing, and healthcare.

Shane possesses a Bachelor Applied Science (Computing) degree from QUT Brisbane Australia, and a number of industry certifications including TOGAF.
