New Keysight Lab advances UQ engineering education

28 October 2026

Electrical engineering students at The University of Queensland are building their skills in the new UQ Keysight Electronics Lab, established through a contribution of more than $400,000 in laboratory equipment from Keysight Technologies, a global leader in electronic test and measurement solutions.

The facility further strengthens UQ's engineering teaching infrastructure with sophisticated measurement and testing equipment used across industry and research.

The facility includes 56 student workstations equipped with oscilloscopes, waveform generators, digital multimeters and power supplies used extensively across engineering education, research and professional practice.

Head of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Professor Michael Bruenig said the new lab would boost opportunities for students.

"Our students spend a significant amount of time learning in labs, working on projects and tackling engineering challenges, and this facility gives them access to an even broader range of cutting-edge equipment," Professor Bruenig said.

"The new Keysight Lab creates even more opportunities to test ideas, explore concepts and deepen their understanding of how engineering works in practice.

"We're grateful to Keysight for their partnership and investment in our students. This facility will benefit generations of engineering students at UQ."

The official opening brought together EAIT Senior leaders, distinguished members of the Keysight team, staff and students to celebrate the latest milestone in the longstanding partnership between UQ and Keysight.

We were especially pleased to welcome Dr Doug Baney, Keysight's Corporate Director of Education, and Han Sing Lim, Vice President and General Manager of General Electronics Measurement Solutions (GEMS), who has been a longstanding champion of education partnerships and laboratory development across the Asia-Pacific region.

Dr Baney said Keysight was proud to support the next generation of engineers through its partnership with UQ.

"We're proud to continue our partnership with UQ and invest in the next generation of engineers," Dr Baney said.

"The equipment in this lab is the same kind of equipment students will encounter throughout their engineering careers. Having the opportunity to work with these tools as part of their studies helps build familiarity and confidence long before they enter the workforce.

This equipment will encourage students to stay curious, ask questions and make the most of every opportunity to get hands-on. That's where some of the most valuable learning happens."

Third year electrical engineering student, Josh Harris said the lab complements the practical learning opportunities already available throughout the degree.

“One of the best parts of studying engineering at UQ is putting ideas into practice. Using the same equipment as industry makes what we learn even more transferable to the real world,” Josh said.

"Having access to cutting-edge equipment lin the Keysight Lab shows us how the concepts we’re learning apply and increases the range of tools we know how to use - that broader toolkit is invaluable when we’re solving real problems in industry.”
