We develop tools and techniques to measure and control the way light interacts with the world around us. This work spans the electromagnetic spectrum, from the visible light we can see with our eyes, to the infrared and terahertz radiation which we cannot. Our work includes both fundamental and applied research areas such as:

  • Using terahertz waves for cancer and disease diagnosis, optical biosensing, security, environmental monitoring, and cultural conservation;
  • Developing and using sophisticated tools to manipulate light’s shape, spectrum (colour), and how it changes on very short timescales, for applications in optical communications, biomedical imaging, astronomy, and classical and quantum signal processing.
